CALL FOR IDEAS - MEDITERRANEAN REGION: YOUNG RESEARCHERS TO PRESENT SOLUTIONS FOR THE ENERGY TRANSITION

OMC – Med Energy Conference, in cooperation with the Union for Mediterranean (UfM) and Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM), has recently launched the second edition of the Call for Ideas - Mediterranean Region, an opportunity for new generations of researchers and young professionals to emerge, offering them the possibility to present their ideas and projects on energy transition to accelerate the pathway toward more clean, affordable and secure energy and provide solutions to achieve socio-economic growth for the territory and the community.

The “Call for Ideas – Mediterranean Region” addresses young researchers born in or after the year 1982 of nationality and citizenship of the Mediterranean Area, in possession of a Master’s Degree, and who have developed a well-defined project idea or a project either at a university, a university spin-off, or a research institute of this region on the areas covered by the following Technical Streams: Operational Excellence, Technologies (in terms of either breakthrough solutions or innovative usage of existing ones), Carbon Neutrality and Circular Economy.

“The Call for Ideas - Mediterranean Region is an opportunity to involve all the stakeholders who can contribute to the energy transition,” said Monica Spada, President of OMC. “Creating alliances is our ambition: we are truly convinced of the power of cooperation because we can only guarantee an equal and just transition for all by putting in common know-how, experience, and resources. We are very pleased to cooperate with the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) and the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM) in launching the second edition of the Call for Ideas - Mediterranean Region”, she added.

For his part, Grammenos Mastrojeni, UfM Deputy Secretary General for Energy and Climate Action, stated: “The UfM, together with FEEM and OMC, seeks to promote innovation in renewable energies, as they are progressing due to rapid technological improvements and the need for more energy independence. Yet, in the Euro-Mediterranean region, the Northern markets need more renewable energy than they can produce. Southern shore States and the Balkans have a production potential that largely exceeds their needs. Higher regional integration will create in-sector synergies and produce numerous co-benefits such as employment, security, or decarbonization, among others”.

"The energy, ideas, and enthusiasm of young people have always been part of FEEM DNA, which over the course of more than 30 years of activity has accompanied the professional growth of numerous generations of researchers", said Alessandro Lanza, Executive Director of FEEM. "The energy future of Europe and the Mediterranean Region are inextricably linked: it is of paramount importance today to identify, support and accompany any solution born in local contexts that can meet the challenges posed by the need for energy security and economic growth in a context of full environmental and social sustainability,” he added.

The winners will be invited to present their projects at the Innovation Room on May 25th, 2023, during the OMC - MED Energy Conference in Ravenna. The OMC organization will cover all visa, travel, and accommodation expenses.
The deadline for the presentation of the candidature expires on March 20th, 2023, at 5 PM. CET - Central European Time.
